From the edge of the dancefloor, I watched Skylar and Reece’s first dance. They swayed together slowly, sharing smiles and kisses. In the corner, Gabe bounced his little boy up and down on his lap and mouthed along to the music. Miri hovered behind them smiling, with a hand on Gabe’s shoulder. Warmth glowed inside at seeing my friends so content, but at the same time, an unwelcome emptiness blazed in my chest. Everyone was moving on with their lives. All my friends were leaving me behind.

My gaze fell on the tall, imposing figure of a man at the other side of the dancefloor. Alexander. Even in a crowd, his commanding, masculine presence was compelling. A smart, double-breasted jacket hugged his broad shoulders, and he wore a blue tartan kilt with white knee socks. He’d been dressed the same the night we’d first met. His whisky eyes locked with mine and my heart turned over. The glow of his grin warmed me from across the room. We shared a secret smile. An invisible spell wove around us.

Alex was the first to look away when a blonde woman sidled over to engage him in conversation. My stomach soured with jealousy. Had he brought a date? It shouldn’t have mattered. He was free to date whoever he wanted. The band switched to a livelier song and couples filtered onto the floor. I kept my gaze fixed on Alex to see if he’d be dancing with the mystery blonde, but they were too involved in their conversation.

“You’re not dancing?”

I turned to see a tall, muscular, dark-haired man. Miri’s other brother—the hot ballet dancer one. He shot me a sidelong glance. His smile was that of a man used to getting anything he wanted.

“I’m Elliot. Miri’s brother.”

“I know who you are.”

He inclined his head and held out his hand. “I’m looking for a dance partner.”

He stood so close, his aftershave invaded my nose. It was nice, but it wasn’t Alex’s tantalizing scent.

“I don’t trust myself to dance with a professional. I’d only embarrass myself.”

His firm mouth curved on the edge of a smile. “Maybe I could teach you a few things?”

Laughter and music rattled inside my skull. My chest ached too much to be surrounded by so much joviality. What was wrong with me? I should have been enjoying this. I needed some air.

I gave Elliot a polite smile. “Excuse me.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but I was gone before he could finish. It would be so easy to lose myself for a night in the arms of Miri’s beautiful brother, but it wouldn’t change anything. A tangle in the sheets never got rid of this hollow wound inside my chest. I couldn’t help my gaze from drifting back to Alex. The blonde woman at his side leaned in to whisper something in his ear. My mouth felt tight and grim. Silly to be jealous. Alex wasn’t mine. We weren’t even a thing. We’d hooked up twice. So what?

Weddings did something crazy to your brain.
