Several nearby moviegoers shushed them as the feature began. The opening credits had barely finished when she felt something hit her neck. She brushed it away but she guessed the boys were throwing Raisinets or Milk Duds. She glanced at Brian who shifted in his seat uncomfortably. Obviously he was being assaulted as well. It was pointless to try to watch the film. Every time she started to follow the dialogue, a spit-covered candy hit her in the head.
“I’m going to the bathroom,” she whispered and headed down the stairs. She was furious with Brian, Travis and his moronic friends. Brian was so stubborn and they were so immature. Why couldn’t everyone be a lesbian?
She took her time in the empty bathroom but instead of returning to the theater, she headed to the foyer and sat on a bench facing a large James Bond movie cutout. While she couldn’t have cared less about Double-O-Seven, she loved the Bond women, particularly Halle Berry.
“Hey.”
She’d been so busy thinking of Halle emerging from the ocean in a bikini that she hadn’t noticed Sonia approach.
“Hey.”
“Can I sit with you?”
Pandy slid over and Sonia joined her.
Sonia bit her lip and looked down. “I’m sorry about what happened earlier. Travis can be a total jerk. Is your head okay?”
She nodded. “Yeah. Why aren’t you in the theater?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why do you hang out with him? Is he your boyfriend?”
She shook her head. “I don’t know. All my friends wanted us to date and it just kinda happened.” She glanced at her as if to gain her approval. “Pretty stupid, huh?”
Pandy shrugged. “I think you should only hang out with people who make you feel good about yourself.”
Sonia seemed to ponder this. Then she turned and asked, “Can I tell you something, Pandy?”
“Sure.”
“I bet you’d be good to hang out with. I mean, I’ll bet you’re really loyal to your friends.”
Sonia stared at the bench’s dark blue fabric. Pandy didn’t know what to say. She wasn’t used to getting compliments. In fact only a few adults like Ms. Clark and Mrs. Strauss ever said anything nice to her. She shifted her pinky finger ever so slightly toward Sonia who met her halfway. Pandy couldn’t believe that she was practically holding hands with the hottest eighth grade girl at Cedar Hills. As if she was worried Pandy would mistake the touch as an accident, Sonia wrapped their fingers together.
“Is this okay?” Sonia asked softly.
“This is great,” she replied, grinning. “I had no idea you were like me.”
Sonia smiled. “Do you think we could hang out this weekend?”
“Yeah, sure.” Her smile faded when she remembered the movie. “Sonia, can I ask you a personal question?”
“What?”
“When we go back inside are you gonna make out with Travis?”
Her cheeks reddened and she hung her head. “I don’t know. I guess so. It’s just a BJ. No big deal.”
She couldn’t believe it. “But it is a big deal, especially if you don’t really like him that way. Then it’s wrong.” Sonia pulled her hand away and Pandy’s stomach knotted.
