That September, Kate had her second lucky escape from a car crash. As in the first, back in Sanderstead days with Clark, she was a passenger.

Though she’d only recently passed her driving test that May, her black Range Rover was being driven by a chauffeur as she was on her way to Southend for a Vogue photoshoot. Just after 11am, her Range Rover smashed into a Rover Montego on the A13 just outside Orsett.

The collision was violent. Both cars rolled down an embankment. Kate’s car smashed through trees and bushes and stopped in a six foot ditch the right way up. She was trapped for half an hour until a fire crew forced open the doors. Treated by paramedics she was helicoptered to Basildon hospital complaining of pains in her back and neck. A hospital official confirmed she’d suffered “quite a nasty injury,” but nothing permanent. The chauffeur escaped with minor neck injuries.

The occupants of the Montego were also lucky. They were an elderly couple in their eighties, Edith and Bert Hills. Their car had landed upside down and for a moment Edith lost consciousness. Bert panicked, “I didn’t know if Edith was dead or alive. Then I heard her groaning softly.” They too, were treated for minor injuries.

The crash started a media show. The hospital was besieged by paparazzi scenting blood. To get Kate out unseen, she was covered in a blanket and led by hospital staff through a tunnel into the mortuary and then through a fire exit. A hospital worker commented, “I couldn’t believe the lengths Kate’s entourage went to avoid being photographed. I thought that’s what she did for a living. It seems crazy that the hospital had to go to all these lengths to prevent photographs being taken of a model.”
