“Good job, Benton, we were able to shut down a few of his spots and arrest some of his guys, but, unfortunately nobody is talking. Not only that, nothing connects him directly to any of this. It’s only hearsay. I need you to find out everything you can about his organization, so we can bring him down once and for all,” my boss told me.

“I’m trying, Dan, but Kasper isn’t dumb, and he keeps me far away from that life,” I explained.

“You better find a way, Benton, or not only will you lose your job, but I’ll arrest your ass so fast for obstruction that your head will spin,” he said.

With that, he walked out the office and left me to my thoughts.

Pacing the floor, I ran my hands through my hair and thought about the hole I had dug myself into. I was so far under at this point, that I had basically fucked myself. On one hand, if Kasper found out, he would kill me, and on the other hand, if I didn’t get what my boss wanted, then I was going to prison.

Flopping down in my office chair, I looked through the files on everybody who was arrested in the raid and tried to narrow down the weakest link. I didn’t know any of these people, but I knew that I could make one of them crack. I had to. But I would get them to flip on Mario, not Kasper. That way, my husband stayed free, and I stayed out of the crossfire.

I smiled widely as I put the plan together in my head. Mario didn’t like me anyway, and the feeling was mutual, so I didn’t give a fuck what happened to him. I was jarred out of my thoughts by a knock at the door.

“Come in,” I called out.

I looked at ‘Nicole’ also known as Agent Iesha Turner as she sat down in the chair across from my desk.

“Why the long face?” she asked.

After I gave her a quick rundown on the conversation I had with our boss, she sighed and shook her head.

“I told you this was gonna happen, Lucy, when I saw you getting in too deep. I told you to get them to pull you out, but what did you say? I got this, Esha, I promise,” she mocked me.

“I do have this,” I said with more confidence than I felt.

“Who you think you foolin’ Lucille? I’ve known you since we were kids. I’ve worked dozens of cases with you, and never once did you get this close. When you got pregnant, I told you to back out, you wouldn’t. When he proposed, I told you to say no, but you claimed that this would get you closer. Now you’re in so deep that nobody can help you, not even me. Kasper is a stone cold killer, Lucille. What you think is gonna happen when he finds out you’re a Fed?”

“He loves me. He’ll see that I’m trying to protect him,” I replied, and she laughed.
