SEVENTEEN

DANE

I glance at Evangeline over the top of my wine glass before downing another sip. She’s impossible not to stare at in this lighting. The glow of the candles makes her look impossibly soft, like if I reached over to brush her cheek with my fingertips, she’d be made of velveteen and satin.

We’re both mostly done with our tourtière now. Evangeline is picking the last flakes of the crust apart with her fork, her lips stained with the deep red wine. I chew on my own lip as I imagine pulling hers between my teeth.

I want to suck on her lip. I want to taste the way the wine lingers on her skin. I want to see what she’d look like naked in this candlelight.

I want a lot of things.

“So...” She sets her fork down and picks up her glass. “Tell me what happens now.”

I force myself to look at her eyes instead of her mouth. “Huh?”

“With the photos. You told Diamond you’d get them to her next week, so what do you do with them now?”

“Oh.” I clear my throat and take another sip of wine before I answer. “Well, I could probably get them to her faster, but I like to take my time with editing when I can. I took a lot of shots today, so it’s going to be a lot of work to go through them and decide which ones I even want to edit in the first place.”

She nods. “And what does editing entail?”

Part of me can’t believe she actually cares about this stuff, but the look on her face is so earnest I decide to trust that maybe, unlike with my family, some questions about my dream career aren’t part of a thinly veiled attempt to prove I’m not actually doing anything with my life.

“For me, editing is the part where the magic really happens. People who don’t know a lot about it tend to freak out and call photographers cheaters when they hear the word ‘Photoshop,’ but the thing is...photos are about feelings. If the only kind of photography that existed was hyper-realistic photojournalism, can you imagine all the creativity and beauty we’d miss out on?”

I trail off and swirl the wine in my glass for a moment as I search for a way to put the process into words.

“When people look at my photos, I want them to feel what I felt. I want them to notice what I noticed. I want them to gasp and sigh and even cry because they’re so overcome with just how magical a single fraction of a second in time can be. That’s what photography is: it’s a way to make us stop and appreciate the fact that we all walk through a thousand perfect moments a day and don’t even take the time to notice them. Editing helps me point people in the right direction.”

I look up from where I’ve been staring into the depths of my wine and find Evangeline watching me from behind her glasses, the gleam of the candles making the lenses glint.
