Chapter 29

Lanie

“Here you go, dear. Do you need a pen too?” Mrs. Vanderhaven held out a spiral notebook and a thick Bible for me to take.

“Yes, please.” I scooted my bottom to the floor so I could lean against the couch and use the coffee table as my work station. “Thank you,” I said as she returned with a pen.

“I’m going to be in the kitchen working on a new recipe. Take all the time you need.”

I nodded and mumbled another “thank you” before cracking open the Bible.

Grady dropped me off so he could check in with his job at the department store. Thankfully, Jim met me here, and Mrs. Vanderhaven seemed undisturbed by our presence.

“What are you looking for with that?” he asked me.

I was looking for Ephesians first. Somewhere around there, if I recalled correctly, was the section of the Bible that mentioned the armor of God and an invisible war. “There’s a particular part I remember,” I said. “It talks about how, though we cannot see it, there’s a parallel world to ours. In the Bible, they referred to it a few times as ߵheavenly places.ߴ”

“Wow,” Jim said. “That’s actually kind of cool!”

“Yeah, I guess so,” I agreed. “But it’s not just that there’s this invisible world. Apparently that world is all around us, and angels and demons are battling it out over human souls and power over this world.”

“An invisible war? Like, right next to me?” Jim’s voice cracked with his last word.

“Well, yeah. We can’t see it. But somehow, Grady and I are seeing parts of it.” I tapped my pen on the open notebook in front of me. “At least, that is what I suspect those shadow creatures are. I think they’re part of that invisible world, part of the battle. And they’re not the creatures fighting on our behalf. They’re fighting for the enemy.”

“When you say the enemy, you really mean the Devil, don’t you?”

“I do.”

“This all sounds very hocus-pocus to me,” Jim said.

“A lot of people agree with you. Until a few days ago, I would have too.” I shook my head and took off my glasses to wipe my hand across my face. “Honestly, I still kind of agree with you. It is what magical, mythical stories are made of. But I’ve seen some of it with my own eyes. There’s something to it, Jim.”

“I believe what you believe, doll,” he responded. “You should know that by now.”

“I know. You’re a good friend. I just need to understand this all better. My sister didn’t just disappear on her own. And the fire at my house didn’t just start by itself.” I wiped the lenses of my glasses on my cotton T-shirt and propped the frames up on my nose. “I also don’t believe in coincidences. It wasn’t by chance that these shadow creatures started appearing right after the house fire and my sister’s disappearance. It’s all connected. It has to be.”

“So, what do you think the connection is?” Jim asked.

“I don’t know yet,” I admitted.
