Chapter Nine

“I still can’t believe you’re designing Christmas pajamas for the legendary Spencer Carmichael. Maybe he’ll ask for your help every year,” Gwen said from the other side of the dressing room stall. “You two will become the renowned dynamic duo of the sleepwear industry.”

“Whoa. Slow your roll, please.” Charlie slid on the reddish-purple suit jacket, barely recognizing herself in the mirror. “It’s one design idea, and it’s really not that big of a deal. Anyone can help him. If you’ve got a good one, I’m all ears.”

“Let me think . . . I know! What about puppies and kittens wearing Christmas jammies? Growing up, my brother and I used to dress our terrier, Rosco, and orange tabby, Roxy, in them every year without fail.” She giggled. “Rosco loved stretching out in his flannel jammies by the fireplace, but Roxy, not so much.”

“I don’t know. It’s a fun idea, but it might be too adorable. Spencer told me specifically no cutesy designs.” Charlie ran a hand down the hem of the matching purple skirt, glancing down at her bare, pasty-white legs and black wool socks. For her interview, she’d have to ditch the work boots and pull out the black heels she’d stored in the back of her closet. Way in the back.

Ugh. And she’d have to trade in her comfy socks for nylons. She spun around in the mirror. Maybe she could get away with high boots and black tights.

She picked up her tan overalls off the velvet-blue bench. Was she ready to hang these up for good?

Maybe, but not today. She slipped one arm out of the jacket and gave it a celebratory shake. “Much better.”

“Char-liee! Come out of there right this second. I’m dying to see how the suit looks on you. You’re trying on the plum one first, right?”

“Sorry, little arm. Back you go,” she whispered and slid the jacket back on, tucking in the satin black top Gwen had also given her. “Don’t you dare laugh.” She opened the door.

Gwen’s eyes widened. “Laugh? You look amazing! I knew that color would be just perfect with your skin tone. That purple is gorgeous.” Her best friend placed her hands on Charlie’s shoulders and spun her around. “I can’t believe how great that jacket hangs on you.” She inspected the cuffs. “Why, you aren’t going to need any alterations at all.”

Charlie hadn’t thought about it being too long. “I guess that’s a good thing, since I’ll be wearing it on Monday. You really think I look professional?” she asked, her hesitation accentuated in every syllable.

Gwen made a face, reaching over and straightening out the jacket. “You already are a professional.”

“You know what I mean. I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb on the train ride.” She sighed, glancing down at her wool socks again. “I feel like a misfit.”

“You are certainly not. You, Charlie Dobbs, are going to fit right in with all the other New Yorkers. No, I take that back.” She waved her hand high in the air.
