Transcendence: The Impersonal Cognitive Perspective

As stated, the impersonal dimension of religiosity is composed of three variables that forfeit some of their reliability when merged into a single index. Nevertheless, this index yields several important complementary insights for the assessment of religious identification of Jews versus non-Jews. First, as with the two previous indexes, the sociodemographic variables explain a larger share of variance in Jews’ impersonal religiosity than in that of non-Jews (table 4.5). Second, being Jewish is positively and significantly associated with the impersonal dimension of religiosity. Third, Jews are less inclined than members of the reference group (mainline Protestants) to display impersonal religiosity. According to the level of the correlations, Jews are near the bottom of the impersonal religiosity scale; only two groups, adherents of other faiths and the unaffiliated, have a stronger negative relation. As with the other indexes of Jewish identification, the differentiation of non-Jews by specific group belonging increases the explanatory power of the model considerably.
