Drama Queen
Looking at it from the outside, it is sometimes tempting to think that being Jessie Wallace must be exhausting. No incident in her life is without drama. Just when she seems to have sailed serenely into calmer waters, a foaming wave inevitably threatens to engulf her and anyone associated with her. Late in 2003, the circumstances surrounding her private and public life followed this well-worn pattern. Yet more upheavals lay directly ahead.
For a start, as the relationship between Jessie and Dave progressed, not everyone, it seemed, appeared to be totally happy for the young couple. One such person was Georgina Davis, an office administrator from Billericay, Essex, who had previously been Daveâs girlfriend. Livid that her boyfriend was now living with someone else, she couldnât help herself and launched into a tirade of abuse about Jessie just one week after she had won Most Popular Actress at the National Television Awards.
âIf the viewers knew what she was really like, no one would ever watch her again,â Georgina said. âWhen I heard that she had won that award, I just laughed my head off. Itâs not even as if she is good-looking. You only have to take one glance at her to realise that itâs not her looks heâs gone for. Sometimes you see her in the paper and she looks as ugly as sin. Sheâs put on so much weight and looks like a beached whale.
âBut if he thinks Jessie Wallace is more attractive than me, heâs absolutely mad. Thatâs what everyone tells me and theyâre right. Heâs only interested in her money and in using her as a passport to fame. She obviously doesnât care about anyone except herself â how else could she do this to another woman?â
It was clearly the massive upset of a woman scorned, albeit an upset that made the headlines, as everything in Jessieâs life seemed to do these days. Georgina felt that Jessie had stolen Dave away from her, saying the two had been closely attached before she came along. And since Jessie was rich and famous, she felt that these two elements had been more of a motivating factor for Daveâs feelings than they should have been.
Her hurt was understandable, although perhaps it should have been directed towards her ex rather than Jessie. It was not Jessie who had gone after Dave, but vice versa; indeed, it is not clear whether she even knew that he had a girlfriend when the two of them met. And, if truth be told, Dave and Georgina had been together less than a year when Jessie came along. It was not as if she was trespassing into a long-established relationship. Even so, Georgina was clearly very hurt and itâs no easier to lose a boyfriend to a celebrity sex symbol than to the girl who lives down the road.
âI thought Dave was going to be my husband,â Georgina said. âHe told me almost every day he wanted to marry me but, out of the blue, Jessie Wallace comes along and snatches him.
