Jed
After he dropped Mercedes off at her publisherâs office, he headed into the firm. Jed sat behind his fatherâs big desk, wondering what his next move should be. If he closed the firm, so many people would be out of jobs, heâd feel awful, but finding a like-minded partner was proving to be damn near impossible.
âHello,â a man called from the reception area. âIs anyone here?â Jed wanted to shout back that they were closed, but what if it was someone who needed his help? Hadnât he just told Mercedes that he wanted to keep the firm open to help people?
âBack here,â he shouted. A young man walked into his fatherâs office wearing a full three-piece business suit and the shiniest shoes that Jed had ever seen. Yeah, he was pretty sure that this guy didnât need his help but was there to interview for the position that Jed had posted online.
âCan I help you?â he asked.
âUm, yes,â the guy said. âAt least, I hope that you can. I got this from my fatherâs lawyer,â he said, crossing the room to hand an envelope to Jed. âI think that it might interest you.â
âSo, youâre not here about the job then?â Jed asked. He was almost disappointed to hear that since the guy was his first real prospect in almost two days.
âJob?â the guy asked. Jed pulled the papers out of the manila envelope and quickly looked them over. âYour name is Andrew Wild?â he asked.
âIt is,â the man breathed. Jed had a sinking feeling that was quickly turning into a giant knot in his tummy. He continued to read the document that said that Andrew Wildâs father had left him half of a firmâand if Jed wasnât mistaken, it was his firm that Andrew was entitled to half of.
âWhat the fuck is this?â Jed spat, tossing the papers down to his desk.
âThe short of it is, we share a father. I never knew that you or someone named Grizz existed until dad died, and now, his lawyer has shown up at my apartment to rock my world. Apparently, your dadâweâll our dad, has kept me and my mother a secret from you and your brother. Dad left his half of the company to me, and according to his lawyer, he left everything he had to me. Iâm sorry.â
Jed stood from behind his fatherâs chair and faced down his supposed half-brother. âYou didnât know about me or Grizz until when, exactly?â he asked.
âUntil yesterday when Dadâs lawyer showed up at my place and gave me those papers. I wasnât sure what was going on. Dad never told me about you or your brother. I had no idea that I wasnât an only child.â
âAre you a lawyer?â Jed asked.
âI am,â Andrew said. âI just passed the bar and I work for a small firm across town. Maybe youâve heard of themâDooley and Michaels.â
âYeah, Iâve heard of them. Theyâre a decent firm. Listen, itâs not that I donât believe you, Andrew,â Jed started.
âPlease, call me Drew,â he insisted.
