CHAPTER 10
The sun had been up several hours when suddenly Jake grabbed the pistol and sat up on the cot glaring at the renegade, White Shadow. Jakeâs quick movement woke Pat who instantly wrapped his fingers around his rifle. As Shadows eyes made contact with Jakeâs he quickly looked away.
âI ainât slept this late, Pat, since that first mornin at the triple H. Letâs get some chow then letâs get him to Canon. Iâm tired of looking at him. Whatta you say you hit that café across the street. Order me up a mess of eggs and a steak while I check on our horses. I wanna see what Carl got for us to ride.â
âAlright, Jake, meet you at the café,â Pat answered.
As Pat pulled on his boots, Jake stepped onto the boardwalk in front of the sheriffâs office. With great care he scanned the roof tops on the opposite side of the street, looking for any movement. The pounding rain had let up: puddles of water dotted the street. Looking up and down the street, he noticed Carl tying three horses to a hitching post. As he made his way across the narrow street, the mud curled over the sides of his boots. Getting closer, he saw two of the horses were saddled and ready to ride, the third was bareback with a lead rope only.
âHow âbout some breakfast with me and Pat, Carl?â Jake asked.
âAlready ate, Jake, but Iâll have some coffee. Them ainât the best mounts, Jake, but theyâll do,â Carl said.
The morning sun reflected off the puddles of muddy water still in the street, causing Jake to pull his brim down over his eyes. As the two men made their way up the boardwalk, Jake noticed folks on both sides of the street stopping to look.
âWhat they gawking at Carl?â Jake asked.
âYou. They know you got Clinton on the run. Everybody in Colorado heard of them Kiowas. We just didnât know Clinton was involved.â
Stepping to the front door of the café, the two men kicked the mud from their boots and stepped inside. In the corner sat Pat, his hat hanging on the wall behind him and his rifle standing in the corner. The deputyâs badge pinned to his vest was highlighted by his orange hair and his piercing blue eyes.
âMorninâ Carl grab a chair,â Pat said as Jake hung his hat on the wall. Jake had just sit down when a waitress wearing a blue and white plaid dress sat an oval platter with a large T-bone steak surrounded by a half a dozen greasy eggs in front of him.
âEat up, boys, the boss said itâs on the house,â she said with a smile.
âCarl we got some things to talk about,â Jake said as he cut the steak into small pieces.
âOnly me and you and Pat here know where the rest of them Winchester are. Iâd be obliged if youâd ride out to the Jacobâs place and see if you can find them guns. If
