CHAPTER 20

THE MENTEE

* * *

After his last class on Monday, Jackonovan met Lucas in his office at the Turnip Tribune. He walked into his editor’s office to see the schedules of all the different athletic teams on the walls of the room and a list of assignments on his whiteboard. Bradshaw walked into his office and shut the door before taking a seat in his spinning desk chair in front of Jackonovan.

“You’ve been MIA, buddy. What’s been going on?” Lucas said.

“I’ve just been really busy with schoolwork and promoting parties,” Jackonovan said.

Lucas took a sip out of his coffee mug and did a spit take. “You can’t really be telling me that you haven’t written an article in three weeks because of that.”

Jackonovan felt bad because he didn’t want it to look like he was taking his job for the newspaper lightly. He just got distracted by the parties, and it didn’t take much for him to get distracted.

“Yes, I’ve recently started promoting and throwing parties,” Jackonovan pleaded. “But trust me, I’m still committed. Matter of fact, by throwing parties, I’ve come up with even better material for my story on campus life.”

“Well, that campus life story better be elite, because the semester is starting to wind down and I don’t have time for wishy-washy people on my staff. The last few articles you’ve produced haven’t been up to your usual standard, Jack,” Bradshaw said.

He might have only made ten bucks per article, but he didn’t want to lose his job at the Turnip Tribune. So, he thought of a good idea that could give him a chance to earn back some of Lucas’ trust.

“I can cover the rivalry game on Saturday. I’ll shoot a video, too, and turn it into a highlight package to go on the Turnip Tribune website.”

He knew how much Lucas was trying to get more videos on the newspaper’s website.

“If you can pull that off and submit the article to me two and a half hours after the game, then you can keep your position as head sportswriter.”

They both stood up at the same time and shook hands. Jackonovan knew it was important that he nail the game story. The next day, he had to work on his project with Aubrianna. They had an idea, and now they just needed to create their presentation.

Once their class let out, they left to go to the study room in his dorm. Aubrianna set her stuff down and began to write some ideas on the whiteboard, and while she was doing that, Jackonovan went to his room to get his laptop. When he came back, he saw a mind map on the dry-erase board fully fleshed out.

“Whoaaa there, Aubrianna. I was only gone for five minutes!” he said.

“I was wondering what was taking you so long. I’ve been thinking about our project the last couple of days. I pretty much got everything mapped out in my head already,” she said while writing on the board.

Jackonovan was still astonished by how quickly she put the mind map together.
