“That storm made a mess of this road,” Niles Slocum said. “Haven’t seen this much mud in years.” The posse, four strong, led by Acting Sheriff Stan Knowles was crossing the creek where One-eyed Johnny Thornton was captured. The creek was running high, the banks were steep and slick with mud.

“At some point the county is going to have to break down and build a bridge over this mud pit,” Knowles said. “Word from Skelton late last night said the girl might be trying to make it to Elko. If that’s so, she could ride right into our welcoming arms, boys. Keep your eyes open and stay at the ready.”

Knowles had Slocum and two deputies with him, which left three deputies in Elko along with two jailers. “We’ll ride straight to Jack Slater’s place if we don’t cross paths with the Appleton woman.”

The morning was crisp and sunlight glistened off wet leaves, grass, and brush as the men rode south. There wasn’t horse print one on the roadway, Slocum noticed, but rabbits, deer, antelope, and coyotes had already been out and about. Make for easy hunting this morning if we weren’t already involved in hunting something else.
