Reardon rode up to the ranch house porch, saw two men in the barn with rifles pointed his way and waved to them. “It’s Reardon,” he hollered. “Here to see Mrs. Slater.” Ornery Pound walked out of the shadows, recognized Reardon and waved Ezra Jackson off.

“Ride on in Reardon and tie off. We’re a little spooky around here.” Pound walked up on the kitchen porch and held the door for the deputy. “After you,” he said and followed in, poured the two of them a cup of coffee and said he’d find Mims.

Mims followed behind Reardon having been in the kitchen garden and saw him ride up. “I’m right here, Ornery,” she said. “You’re alone, Mr. Reardon?”

“The rest aren’t too far behind me, Mrs. Slater. Young Riley is injured, and I want to alert the doctor in Skelton, also let the sheriff know we got our man.” He smiled, took a long drink of hot coffee and continued. “Jack is fine, Horseface got a little nick, and we have the horse that Obregon stole from here.”

“That’s my horse,” Pound said. “He okay? That’s one fine stock horse, deputy.”

“He’s fine, Mr. Pound.” Reardon was about to say something else when there were loud voices near the barn. The deputy jumped to his feet and with Ornery and Mims right behind him, raced out of the kitchen.

“My God, what happened?” Mims saw Robbie and Ezra Jackson trying to ease Cactus Jack off his horse. Faraday seemed to be covered in blood, and they eased him down onto the ground.

“Lion,” Robbie said. He was breathing hard after the fast ride in and helping get the big man out of the saddle. “His arm is tore up and the cat ripped his shirt and pants wide open. It looks really bad, mama. The lion killed a calf and we followed it when it attacked Cactus. We gotta get him to the doc’s right away.”

“Ezra, get the buggy ready, Ornery get Mr. Faraday in the buggy, and Robbie you help. I’ll get Maybelle and we’ll all go into town.” She was on her knees next to Cactus Jack and saw the deep wounds across his chest, stomach, and upper legs. Faraday was conscious but not saying anything.

“We’ll get you patched up, Mr. Faraday,” she said.
