Chapter 14

“I’ll share.” Maggie held her phone out to me.

“Thank you, honey.”

Hannah laughed at my expense. “Don’t give me that look and don’t blame me. This is why you never get the upgrade.”

“I wish we knew who had the ledger these pages came from.” Costello peered at her phone.

It was then I noticed. “When did you get glasses?”

“When I couldn’t read the computer screen. I think we need to concentrate more on the senator than Malcolm. And I like the idea of blackmail as a motive for all this.”

“I agree. How about this?” I stood and paced once again. “Malcolm somehow gets involved with this ledger. Maybe he finds out what the senator has to hide.”

“But why take three pages? Why not just take the ledger?” Maggie asked.

I thought for a moment, trying to see the scene in my mind. “Maybe he’s in his office. He finds the pages but doesn’t want to take the ledger itself so no one would be suspicious until it was opened. Maybe he takes the pages, puts the ledger back in its place.”

“But remember how the pages looked,” Costello said. “They were ragged. Like they were torn in haste. If he didn’t want to be noticed, you’d think he would be more careful.”

“Then haste is the operative word,” Hannah said. “He was rushed and didn’t have time to be careful. So he yanked them out, put it back where he found it, and scrammed.”

“Scrammed?” I asked. “Look, Marlowe.”

Hannah let out a genuine laugh. “I like that. The Big Sleep. Remember that scene when the woman crawled toward the gun?” Hannah did her best Bogart. “Get up, angel, you look like a Pekingese.”

“You’ve been waiting for the right moment to do that, haven’t you?”

“I have! Timing is everything.”

“So if Aunt Hannah, aka Philip Marlowe, is correct, then we need to find out who Malcolm knew.”

“Or if he was the one to take these pages,” I offered.

“What do you mean?” Hannah asked. “How…?”

“Maybe he had a friend.” Costello looked at me. I nodded. “Our deceased gentleman.”

“Yep, it’s possible. It’s all connected somehow. Either Malcolm was on his own or he had someone with him.”

“The thing that worries me.” Maggie waved her phone. “These entries have different amounts, and the payees or payors are different, which means there’s more than one person who was paying or being paid.”

I slumped back in the chair. “Right. Maybe we should just let Sheriff Crawford figure this out.”

“Ryan, I know she may not have made a good first impression, but something tells me Sheriff Crawford might be a little out of her league here. Something tells me she’s not used to murder.”

“She might need your help.” Hannah glanced at Maggie. “Then she can really flirt with you.”

Maggie let out a snort as she looked at her phone.

“What does that mean?” I said to Maggie while ignoring Hannah’s giggle.

“Nothing.” Maggie glared at Hannah. “It meant nothing.”

“It had to mean something. People don’t just snort for nothing,” I said. Why was I getting so angry?

“Well, that’s not necessarily true.
