Whitney. 14

Friday afternoon, the girls- Kat, Natalie, Macy and Bella- along with Ellie- all convened in my room to help me pick out an outfit for my date with Chet- but not because I was nervous or anything…just because I’d had a lot less experience in this sort of thing than they all did.

“So, we all agree then?” I heard Bella ask the other girls, and they all rattled off their approval. After this ‘major’ decision they went back to watching Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect.

“This one’s Princess of Persia!” Ellie giggled at the bizarre nailpolish names Macy read off from my nailpolish collection as I straightened all the layers of my hair. I scrunched my nose at her as she giggled. She looked absolutely adorable with the lip gloss and blush that Bella put on her when she was also doing my makeup.

When I finished my hair, I did a once over in the mirror. My hair was actually falling straight the way I wanted, my eyeliner and mascara were a little darker as per Bella’s doing, and I was wearing an almost nude, but slightly shiny, pink lipstick. But I was a little nervous. Going out was never this easy…something alwayyys happened, I’d hate my hair halfway through doing it, I’d get waterproof mascara all over my eyelid that would take me ten minutes just to get off or I’d get a zit that I could absolutely not cover up…but tonight, none of that was happening.

The girls had decided I should wear dark denim jeans, my riding boots, and a black tank with a lacy top under a dark grey knit cardigan. And at 7pm I found myself sitting in the lobby of Brooklyn waiting for Chet.

I saw car lights pull into the driveway ten minutes later and sure enough, Chet got out of the car. I studied his cocky walk as he rounded the front of the car and came to the door. His walk said he didn’t care about anyone else, but it also showed that he’d taken the time to perfect a certain walk to use to show everyone else his carelessness…which was kind of an oxymoron…I fought from rolling my eyes and told myself to give him a chance. He was the first college guy to ask me out; I owed it to myself to go.

Chet stood by the entrance with a smile tugging the corner of his lips as he held the door open for me, waiting for me to walk over to him.

I cleared my throat and choked out a ‘hey’ before getting up, happy that no one else was in the lobby. As I passed through the open door he quietly said, “Ready for an epic date?” which I mentally rolled my eyes at, because who even says epic anymore? I politely smiled at him and walked to his BMW, which I bet he thought impressed all the girls, but from having a brother, I knew it was one of their older, crappier models.
