Chapter 7

Kel had been asleep when Richard headed to bed, snoring softly the way he had the previous night. Richard wondered if that was the norm with him or the result of the hit he’d taken to his nose. He found it oddly appealing either way.

He woke at seven-thirty Monday morning to sunshine lighting his bedroom and the aroma of coffee. The latter let him know Kel was already up and moving. Once he was dressed for the day, in jeans and a blue work shirt, and had used the bathroom, he went into the kitchen. He found Kel sitting at the table, still in the dark jeans he’d been wearing when he’d arrived and the sweatshirt Richard had loaned him.

“I was going to fix breakfast,” Kel said when he saw him, “but I didn’t know what you were in the mood for.”

“Eggs and bacon are my norm. Pancakes if I’m feeling creative. Stay,” Richard said when Kel started to get up. “I can do it. I make wicked banana pancakes.”

“If you say so.”

Richard grinned. “I do.” He went to work and several minutes later had a platter full of pancakes, surrounded by sausage, that he put in the middle of the table—which Kel had set while he was cooking, as well as getting syrup from the cupboard, and juice and butter from the refrigerator.

“Not bad,” Kel said after tasting the pancakes.

“Thanks.”

“What time is your first appointment? Nine, right?”

“Yep.”

“How are you going to explain my being there?”

Richard shrugged. “I guess you’ll be a friend. They can make what they want of that.”

Kel chuckled. “You know where their minds will go, but it works.”

When they finished eating and had done the dishes, Richard took Kel into his bedroom. “Take you pick of pants and shirts.” He opened the closet door and pointed to the dresser. “Oh, and underwear. You’re probably tired of wearing the same pair.”

“Actually, I’m not. I mean wearing any.”

For whatever reason, Richard wasn’t terribly surprised. It sort of fit the man he’d been starting to know better over the last day and a half. “You probably could use clean socks, though.”

Kel nodded, chose jeans and a light-blue work shirt from the closet, and socks from a dresser drawer. “You might want to, umm, turn your back,” he said as he took off the borrowed sweatshirt and began to unzip his jeans.

“Or not,” Richard said under his breath as he did. If Kel heard him, he didn’t react which was just as well. He resisted the temptation to look when he heard Kel taking off his jeans. Moments later, Kel asked if he had a belt he could borrow, which let Richard know he was at least partially dressed. He got one from a hook in the closet, handing it to Kel while, once again, admiring his naked chest.

“Your bruises are healing,” he said when Kel gave him a knowing look.

“Yeah, although I’ll still need to cover the ones on my face. We don’t want the restoration guys thinking you’ve been beating me up.
