Chapter 31

My Job

Daniel planned a party that night for after the game. Beaumont’s win streak had ballooned to 36 games. It was a reason to celebrate. Tim told Coach Joe he was going out to the movies with Donna, but they changed their minds and ended up at Daniel’s house. There was a wild party going on when Donna parked her car across the street from Daniel’s house. She and Tim got out of the car and held hands and walked around behind Daniel’s house and entered the basement door. Donna walked in first. Tim hesitated and then followed in after her. Donna waited for Tim and saw the look on his face change. His smile left him and his brow furrowed.

“You hate this.” Donna handed him some water. People smoked and drank and danced. “But you still come to these parties. Why?”

“I hate this.” He gestured at some kids smoking and drinking. “But I like them.” He nodded to the clumps of kids who came in to the party or left to do something else.

“Why don’t you ever have people over? I mean, I’d swing by, I suppose.”

She planted a quick kiss and pulled him close. As she held him, Andy, Bobby, and Daniel stumbled out of a back room. They each had a beer in their hands and a cloud of smoke hung over their heads. Donna stepped toward her brother.

“You had enough yet, Bobby?”

“There’s never enough. Not with these two.” He grabbed Andy and Daniel around the neck and yanked them close. “Best damn players on the team!”

“Hell, yeah. The best players on the team.”

Andy swayed and Bobby caught him.

“And Daniel Russell is the best quarterback this town has ever seen.” Bobby thrust another beer at Daniel. “The best, evah!” Bobby yelled and Daniel put the beer to his mouth and guzzled it down.

“Yeah, the best evah.”

Daniel staggered away to his left pass Bobby and Andy and he bent over and put his hands on his knees and threw up. Some of it spattered onto Tim’s sneakers. Donna jumped back.

“God, Daniel. Watch out!”

Donna pulled Tim back and Daniel’s stomach heaved again. Bobby and Andy roared with laughter.

“He’s had quite a night. Isn’t that right, Daniel?” Andy tried to help his friend wipe off the rest of the puke from his game jersey that he still wore from the game that afternoon.

“Coach Joe better not find out. Right Tim?” Bobby was close enough that Tim could not miss the stink of beer and the reek of dope. “What do you think, Tim? Gonna tell your dad we’re stoned?”

Bobby put his hand on Tim’s shoulder. Tim slapped it off.

“Freaking Coach Joe.”

Daniel puked again, this time toward Jeff Tony who arrived with Quick Lou, Bill Bradner, and Steve Staber. The four newcomers jumped back. They looked at Daniel with amusement, but their grins didn’t last long when Daniel fell to his knees and landed in a puddle of his own vomit. He coughed and spat out the last of the bile lodged in his throat.
