Lizardi Commer: Karag

Class: Infantry

Level: 8

Karag Infantry make up the backbone of any Lizardi army. They rarely adventure alone, always finding strength in numbers. In the presence of a lord who can properly gear, manage, and instruct them, they become extremely dangerous. If encountered, focus their masters first, then cut them down.

“Cut them down… I love it when you talk dirty,” I muttered, shifting my gaze. Anna lay on her side, heaving deep breaths. Either she took a sword to the chest or she was in a full blown panic attack. “Shit.” I hurried over, sliding across the stones with my armored knee covers. “Sshhh!”

I stroked her neck while checking her body. She hit the karag at a dead sprint… but she showed no signs of damage. Her earlier bravado swapped to reality: she could have died. For the next few minutes, I continued to talk in a soothing tone, reminding her to breathe with deep in and outs.

Anna suffered from shock and time was the only cure. Some people might laugh that an unkillable soul reborn into a horse experienced tremendous fear of death, but I understood it better than most. So many of my fellow trainees washed out for various reasons, some exactly like this.

I rotated to hold her head in my lap, shushing her until she eventually hyperventilated and passed out. It wouldn’t shock me if the Powers put her under simply because she should have lost consciousness by now.

With a heavy heart, I gently laid her head down. Anna would be fine, but I had to leave her for now.

In the distance, the screams of death transitioned into the screams of joy as locks snapped. Whoever or whatever the people of this region prayed to, we answered their call for help. This moment would be very sentimental to a whole lot of the freed slaves. They’d just stopped others from ever reaching the mines.

I smiled, nodding my head with pride as I progressed to the carriages door. The rams seemed to not mind as I crossed in front of them, either used to death or so trained to follow the cart in front of them, they didn’t care.

I stepped over a Lizard corpse with a crossbow bolt in the chest. “If there’s one good thing with crossbows, it’s that they're hard to miss with.”

The ladder to the driver’s bench dripped rain into a puddle of blood that leaked out of a headless karag. I hefted the body, holding it in front of me like a shield as I approached the door handle.

Everything I learned about portals was they didn’t go far. With that in mind, the door may be trapped or a shaman may be ready to ambush me. My free hand gripped the handle, feeling a lock.

With immense strength, I yanked back, shattering the sliding bolt. Splinters of wood crashed against my armor while the door swung open. I peered inside, exhaling a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding; no shaman rested inside, no traps exploded, and no slaves tried to defend their mistress’ items.
