Chapter Fifteen

NORDAN PLAINS

You have connected to ten compound skelemen and one demon. Claim these as minions of the undead for four hundred and two point three five six kilozorta. Would you like to proceed? (Yes) / (No) - Yes selected.

Error: demon cannot be claimed as a minion of the undead.

Error: claiming ten compound skelemen as minions of the undead requires more minion spaces than you currently have available.

I blinked in confusion at the prompt floating in midair before me. Not only was the error message about minions totally off, since I had way more than ten minion slots available, the one about the demon was new.

I racked my brains but couldn't remember having gotten error messages like the demon one before. It was so weird.

I'd never even been able to connect to any demons before. And yet now it was telling me that I could, but then giving me an error message when I tried to?

Were the gods messing with me? I frowned.

Tarla leaned over me and asked, "Something wrong, Damien? You only frown like that when you're thinking about something."

I glanced up at my wife's face, letting my eyes lingered for a beat or two on her low-cut robe.

Okay, maybe more than a moment or two. Tarla must've noticed too because she snickered.

"Eyes up here, mister. Now, tell me what’s wrong."

I reviewed the error messages again, then said, “It’s… Tarla, do people on Nordan ever get error messages when prompts tell them to do something that they can't?"

Tarla straightened up and tapped her lip in thought. “I don't think so? Maybe, though. Or maybe it's just a champion thing? You should probably ask Caitlyn about it once Bell and Lauren are finished setting up this church of theirs."

A quick survey of the town had shown no sign of a church to any god, or even just a generic church. Bell argued that since this place had been populated only recently, it might be possible to convert one of the outbuildings into a church to Caitlyn. She’d taken Lauren to help her.

She’d explained her reasoning thus, “It’s a low-cost option. Building a church doesn't take that much zorta. Since it's so plentiful in the forests, we can just cultivate it back in no time. Really, the major expenditure of doing this is just time. Once you claim the skeletons, though, they should be able to help."

If only she'd known that claiming the skeletons would be part of the problem. I flicked my hand across my core to double check my stats.
