Stone was trying really hard to deal with this situation and not flip his shit. All because he’d saved Isaak from a burning building, his life had turned upside down. Now he was inside enemy territory, the stench steeped in his lungs.

It was just him. Stone had no pack. He was an independent wolf shifter, but right about now, a pack would have been nice. He could’ve gone to them for help instead of stepping inside Eleazar’s estate. His dog would probably get a better reception than him.

Speaking of, he was worried about Loki. Isaak had taken him thirty minutes ago, and he wanted his damn dog back. He was five seconds away from leaving Isaak’s bedroom and hunting down Loki when the door opened and Isaak stepped in, Loki running to Stone with his tail wagging.

Loki was the only one who seemed happy to see him. Isaak wore a solemn expression, his shoulders too stiff, his gaze never meeting Stone’s.

“What’s going on?”

His smile was tight. “Just spoke with Eleazar. It’s best you stay in my room until Cash is found and dealt with.”

“The hell I will,” Stone snarled. “I’m going to be out there looking for him, too.”

“With who?” Isaak asked. “By yourself? We barely escaped that explosion with our lives, Stone. He keeps himself surrounded by his followers. There’s no way you can win.”

It hurt just a little that Isaak had so little faith in him. Stone had gotten his mate out of that burning building and to safety. He was able to get away from whoever had taken a shot at him and get Isaak back to his place unscathed. He wasn’t a guy running on pure luck. He had the skills—when he went on the offense—to take down his enemies.

“But you can? “Stone asked. “You and your merry band of bloodsuckers?”

Stone had no idea why he’d said that. Was it because he was hurt and lashing out? Was it because this entire situation was getting to him?

Isaak looked as if Stone had struck him. He took a step back and then glared at him. “We’re more than capable of taking down any threat, wolf. Grab Loki and I’ll show you to a guest bedroom.”

He was out the door before Stone could apologize for his crude comment about his mate being a bloodsucker. It was true, but Stone hadn’t had to say it in such a derogatory manner. Now he was wondering what the fuck fate was smoking when it decided Stone and Isaak would make a great pairing. They had nothing in common and were enemies.

What good could come of this? Nature made mistakes all the time, so who was to say fate wasn’t filled with blunders?

With a snarl, Stone grabbed Loki’s leash and followed his mate up a flight of stairs and down the hallway.

As pissed as he was, Stone was still amazed by the inside of the estate. While the ground floor had polished steel fixtures and furniture with sleek lines
