CHAPTER 38

The Yankees had the day off on Monday, so after breakfast and a quick shower, Sky Allen dialed up the number for Dixon and Patty’s new house and then awaited someone to pick up the phone. “Hello!” Dixon’s familiar voice came across over the line. “Hey buddy, it’s Sky! How goes it?” Sky Allen asked. “It’s going good, Sky!” Dixon replied. “It’s nice to have a day off, huh?” “Y’all ain’t lying there, Dixon! Kinda gives you a chance to recharge the old battery a little,” Sky observed.

“That’s true, Sky! So what’s up?” Dixon wondered. Sky Allen then spent the next several minutes informing Dixon about the strange conversation that he had had in the middle of the night with Ronnie. He stopped short of telling Dixon about Ronnie’s former occupation, but he did tell him that Ron Spillman had arranged for them to meet, but that it seemed that Ron had wanted to do more harm to him than good. “That’s odd!” Dixon replied. “Yeah, you’re right, it seemed very odd to Ronnie and I. “Well, Sky, even back in High School he was kind of the somber, moody type; you know, the perfect personality for a pitcher,” Dixon observed, as both men chuckled at Dixon’s observation that pitchers tended to be a strange breed. He continued by noting that, “He was somewhat of a loner, except for his teammates and his relationship with Linda Warner; they were like soulmates,” Dixon recalled. “Then, after the accident, I really hadn’t seen or spoken to him in years. Heck, the last time that I even heard mention of his name, was when you told me that you had become friendly with him when you were in Oakland, and that you guys wanted me to have a night on the town with you when he comes here to play us in September.” “That’s right, he seemed very anxious that I promised him that I would bring you out with us,” Sky recounted. “Well, before we all go getting paranoid about Ron’s
