The Chelembra Bank Robbery

And so now it is time to see the robbery through the eyes of the criminals themselves, for you to understand how the bank heist was pulled off.

After meeting with Kunheedkutty and Shahabas, Babu headed over to the hotel in Chelembra and went inside.

The chair, marking the position of the strongroom, sat at the end of the hotel floor. Babu sat on the dusty floor with crossed legs. He just stared at the ceiling. The occasional muffled sounds of passing cars from the main road filtered inside. Babu could hear himself breathing. He closed his eyes. His past came back to haunt him . . .

‘He stole my tape recorder. He is a bloody thief! Nayinte mone [Son of a bitch]! Koothara [Low class]!’ Joy screamed and kept hitting Joseph as the cops tried to separate them.

Joseph looked around as the police were dragging him off. The villagers were glaring at him with disgust. One of the older men stared at him directly and then spat into the ground, ‘Kallan [Thief]!’

Joseph knew that protesting, or trying to prove his innocence, would come to naught. The embarrassment, the humiliation, the anger, the helplessness, all gnawed at him like hungry beasts, gnashing their fangs and chewing into his soul.

Babu opened his eyes. He was no longer a helpless Joseph or Jaison—he was Babu—confident, in charge and powerful. He now held the reins of his own destiny. He felt a knot of excitement in the pit of his stomach. He was eager to get the job done. He knew that he would not fail. His life depended on this heist.

He headed to Radhakrishnan’s house to tell them that they would start their work from tonight.

At approximately 6.30 p.m., Radhakrishnan, Kanakeswari and Shibu arrived in the silver Maruti Zen with the KL registration number. They parked it right in front of the entrance of the hotel—blocking anyone from entering the premises. They covered the car with a black cloth.

They trooped inside and for the first time, Radhakrishnan and Kanakeswari were on ground zero.

‘Aah, so that is why you needed the old newspapers!’ Radhakrishnan exclaimed, seeing the windows of the hotel.

Babu explained the plan to them. ‘You see that chair? Right above it is the floor of the strongroom. We will drill and blast our way through the floor. I will climb inside and open the lockers with the help of the gas cutter. It is simple. We should be done in a few hours.’

Babu covered his face with a towel. He pulled on a pair of rubber gloves. He had seen enough movies to know about criminals accidentally leaving behind their fingerprints at the scene of the crime—and he was not about to do that.

‘Always wear your rubber gloves. Do not take them off. There’s going to be a lot of dust.
