My instincts were uncanny, and I knew better than to trust Nathan to be honest with me. I had no memory of Ingrid, so I had to rely on whatever he told me. Which wasn’t much.

The air was cold and crisp, and I was grateful that the wind was blowing in a southern direction, or he would smell me for sure. I rubbed my hands together, missing the warm golden-orange fur that covered my skin in my natural element.

Nathan had told me he would share information with me, that I would be his partner, but here he was, in Montana, hot on the trails for Ingrid. He hadn’t bothered to give me the heads up. Which begged the question – what was he hiding?

I stood close to a utility pole, being careful not to attract attention to myself. There wasn’t much to see on the street. It was a wooded area with groves of trees and a stream flowing gently nearby. I could make out the sound of a blackbird singing in the trees, and smell the pungent odor of fresh green bark after it had rained. The ground was still damp from its effect, and I shifted closer to the pole as I stared at Nathan.

He was acting strangely. He never moved from the same spot the entire night, and now my fingers were numb from doing the same. I shook my legs, they had fallen asleep, and peeped over at him. He had been staring at the same grove of trees for over fifteen minutes. I craned my neck and looked harder, but I couldn’t see anything.

“What is he doing?” I muttered under my breath.

I watched as Nathan glanced nervously around him and slinked across the road.

“What is he up to?” I mumbled again and scooted across the street before he spotted me. Luckily for me, there weren’t a shortage of places to hide among the trees, and I used them for cover as I followed Nathan. Even though a human, my footsteps touched the forest floor like leaf on moss. It was what made wolves especially good at tracking.

Nathan moved closer to an opening within the grove of trees and stood still again. He fumbled in his pocket, grasped something, and I’m sure I heard him sigh, like he was relieved. Nothing made sense to me, and I didn’t see how him being out in the woods had anything to do with Ingrid.

I heard twigs snapping behind me, and I whirled around, anxious and frightened about being caught red-handed. I didn’t want Nathan to know I had followed him. I searched the thickets but didn’t see anyone. I thought I saw something in the shadows, but it had been a long night, and I had been staring at nothingness for a long time. I decided that maybe it was time I headed back – clearly this was a wasted trip.

I turned back again towards Nathan, but he wasn’t there. “What the -?” I combed the bushes, searching for any tell-tale signs, but he was gone.
