The dog attacked. The boy and the beast were entwined, the dog yelped pitifully, there was blood on the snow – the boy had cut the dog’s throat.

The boy threw the dog off him. They were both covered in blood, and the boy was still holding the weapon in his hand.

The farmer came running up with a rope in his hand and started to whip the boy with it, who threw himself at the farmer like a madman and slashed his hand with the knife. The farmer screamed and jumped back, bleeding.

The boy stood there, covered in dog bites and with a bloody knife in his hand, shouting: ‘I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you!’

The farmer decided that the boy must be rabid. He backed away, full of rage, then ran home to get his gun.

The boy staggered out through the gate.

Once outside, he looked for Heinz, but he was nowhere to be seen. Albert set off down the path, trying to get away from the farm as quickly as possible.

The farmer came flying out of the farmstead, aimed the gun and, with shaking hands, pulled the trigger – but Albert was too far away. The bullet missed him, but the boy threw himself down on the path just in case.

Heinz, already in the forest, heard the shot. He didn’t know what direction to go in, but kept moving forward, to get as far away as he could.

Albert got up, looked back and saw the farmer standing there, gazing at his dog. From a distance it looked just like a faint black dot.
