Fifteen
I opened my eyes and stretched my legs, smiling when I saw the view of Joel's kitchen.
"Good morning," Joel whispered, his arm draped gently over me.
"Morning," I sighed. I wanted to lie here forever with his arm over me and the heat of him against me. Yes, forever.
"How did you sleep?" Joel asked.
"Great," I said, rolling over and facing him.
"Me too." He smiled gently at me and then sat up, rubbing his eyes.
"I need to get breakfast going. I think five workers stayed last night." I got off the sofa and walked over to look out the window.
"Do you need help?" Joel asked, setting his feet on the floor.
"No, but I could use the company," I said, glancing at him.
"Okay. Let me shower and get dressed and I can be over in ten minutes. Is that alright?"
"Yes." I nodded. I watched him get out clothes from his bag and then he looked at me.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing. See you in a few," I said before letting myself out. I walked across the yard slowly, replaying last night. I sighed with content and then stopped walking when I felt a sharpness in my foot. I winced when I saw the piece of glass stuck in my heel. I hopped the rest of the way to the house, let myself in and then made my way up the stairs. I ditched my clothes on the bathroom floor, wrapped a towel around myself and then sat on the counter after getting out the First Aid kit.
"I can't do it," I said to myself, staring at the glass. It wasn't in too deep, but I just couldn't make myself pull it out. "Dammit."
"Hello?" I heard Joel call out a few minutes later.
"I'm up here," I said, looking towards the door.
"Oh, okay."
"Could you...come up here? I need help." I frowned when I noticed the towel. I should have kept my clothes on until I removed the glass.
"Help? Are you okay?" Joel asked and I heard his steps stop in front of the door.
"Not really. Uh, I'm in a towel, but you can open the door."
I heard nothing for several seconds before the door began to open slowly. It opened all the way and Joel stood there looking nervous and confused. Then he spotted my bloody foot.
"What happened?" he asked, his eyes widening.
"I didn't clean up after the storm," I sighed. "And there was glass on the ground. I can't bring myself to pull the shard out. Will you do it?" I asked him hopefully.
"Oh. Yeah, sure. I owe you after you cleaned me up after the fire," he said.
I adjusted my legs as I straightened the bloody one out and Joel took my foot in his hands.
"Make it quick," I said.
"Relax your foot," he instructed.
I tried my best to relax it and as I felt Joel grip my foot a little tighter with one hand and reach for the glass with the other I found myself holding my breath. I groaned as he removed the glass from my foot.
