While she got dressed, Manuela sneaked glances at Sophia who was still splayed on the bed fully naked. She was aware she was overstaying her welcome, but her desire to spend more time with Sophia won over her fear of being rejected.
âWe never got around to the other kind of eating out,â she said to break the ice. Her voice steady despite the way her heart raced.
Sophia looked at her a small smile on her lips, her head tilted and her eyes narrowed slightly. The thirty or so seconds it took her to give her answer felt like an eternity. Manuela was already bracing herself for an outright rejection or a noncommittal answer they both would know was only to avoid an awkward moment when Sophia finally spoke.
âThereâs a new Thai place Iâve been dying to try out. Howâs next Friday?
She swallowed the knot that had formed in her throat. âNext Friday sounds perfect.â She took a deep breath. âBut what about brunch today?â
She knew she may be asking for too much, but she wanted to give it a try. She still expected to be rejected but asking to spend time together right away made her intentions clear, and Sophia could decide to meet her halfway or let her down gently.
âI guess I better get my cute ass out of bed and ready so we can make it to Hugoâs, the absolute best brunch spot in the city, before thereâs a line the size of Texas.â
When Sophia jumped out of bed, not caring to cover herself, and ran naked to the bathroom, Manuela had to fight the urge to stop her to plant a kiss on her lips. She looked adorable running like that. It was only brunch, it didnât have to mean anything, but Manuela couldnât help the sliver of hope that took hold in her heart.
âIâll be ready in twenty,â Sophia screamed from the bathroom. Suddenly, her head peeked out from the side of the door. âDoes this count as our first date or is it technically the second?â
Manuelaâs mouth hung open at first, at a loss for words. Of course Sophia would ask directly if she meant for brunch to be a date. âI think it counts as a first date, but we can decide the technicalities later.â
Sophia winked. âSounds like a plan.â
