Greg spoke only once during the drive, and that was to ask about times of services. If they got there to find the place busy…. Nausea churned in his gut.

“Shouldn’t be a problem,” Jon answered. “Evensong usually starts at six o’clock in most churches, and then only on Sundays.”

Greg didn’t reply, couldn’t, and Jon seemed to assume he was stressing about the missing wallet and didn’t ask questions.

They reached the church by the mid-afternoon, and Greg hurried inside, leaving Jon with the car, illegally parked in front of the gates.

Greg made his way to the back of the choir and the loose boss. He wriggled it free, slid the diamonds inside, eased them down, then forced the boss back in place. He rested his forehead on the carved wood and tried to gather his thoughts. He wasn’t the praying type, didn’t even know if he had any kind of religious belief, but—

“Everything okay?”

Jon spoke from behind him and Greg straightened with a jerk.

“Got it.” Greg pasted on a smile, used a sleight of hand to produce his wallet and waved it in front of Jon’s face. “Let’s go home.”

They left the church and headed back to Salisbury. If Jon thought Greg was quiet, he didn’t call him on it, tuning the radio to the local station and humming along to the songs.

But Greg? He stared out of the window at the trees as the car rushed by, and guilt and dread and a hundred other emotions mixed inside him until he wanted to rail at the car door in frustration.

He needed to get back to his room, use his phone and research the hell out of what was going on.

He would find out, then he would tackle Mack head-on. And that was why he couldn’t get involved with Jon.

Abruptly what he felt for Jon wasn’t all about the con.

He had to stay off Interpol’s radar, as he had done to date. Needed to find out what the hell was going on.

But above all of this, even over his own safety, he had to keep Jon in the dark about why he was really here.
