Elenore sat in a chair across from Doctor Ingram, listening as he gently questioned her about her past.

“What do you remember of your mother?”

Mary Griffin’s sad eyes flashed through Elenore’s mind, vague in their familiarity. “I don’t remember a lot about her, other than the fact she cried a lot.”

“Because of your father?” the doctor prompted, writing something on a pad he held.

Elenore thought about that for a moment. “I don’t know. Has Daddy been here to see me?”

Doctor Ingram paused in his writing. “Do you want him to visit you?”

She shook her head. “I— He won’t be happy about me being in here.”

The doctor crossed his legs at the knee. “Why do you think he’ll be upset about you being in the hospital, Elenore?”

“He just will,” she whispered, imagining how enraged he would be when he discovered where she’d gone.

“Tell me about your father.”

Elenore swallowed, unable to meet the doctor’s gaze. “He—He calls me Elle. Especially when I’ve displeased him.”

“Elle, like the letter L?”

“Yes.”

“And do you feel that you displease him a lot?”

Elenore hugged her middle. “I don’t mean to. Daddy says I have something wrong with my brain that makes me do things he doesn’t like.”

Doctor Ingram wrote something on the pad he held. “What sort of things?”

She thought about the men that paid to visit her bedroom, and how her father would become irate if she cried or displeased any of them. But she couldn’t tell the doctor that. He wouldn’t understand.

When she remained quiet, the doctor pressed. “Elenore? What sort of things displeased your father?”

“If-if I didn’t get the chores done on time or dinner finished before he got home, he would get angry.”

“What happened when he became angry, Elenore?”

“He-he beat me.”

The doctor continued to write. “What else did he do to you?”

Elenore’s heart began to pound. Visions of her father holding her down while he took her violently skated through her mind, bringing nausea in their wake.

She recalled the first time he’d entered her room and climbed into her bed. She’d been only eight years old at that time, too young and innocent to understand what was happening to her.

But then the others began showing up…

“Elenore? Are you still with me?”

Doctor Ingram’s voice brought Elenore out of her nightmarish thoughts. She nodded but kept her gaze averted.

“We’ll come back to the question later. You mentioned that your father refers to you by the name Elle when he’s upset with you. How does that make you feel?”

Elenore chanced a quick glance at the doctor before looking away once again. “It makes me feel dirty.”

“Why do you think that is?”

“It’s what Daddy calls me when I’ve been bad.”

“I see. Did your father ever touch you in an inappropriate manner?”

The nausea was back full force. She didn’t want to talk about her father. And she damn sure couldn’t tell the doctor what Elijah did to her when he drank. She couldn’t betray him like that. No matter what, he was her flesh and blood, and he loved her. Didn’t he?

Elenore shook her head.
