There were three tellers in position. Henry Danbridge had just left his office in conversation with a client. They were part way across the floor when Gage and his three partners stepped inside. One man closed the door and stood with his back to it.

On Gage’s nod guns were drawn, Sandoval’s shotgun making its presence known. There was no need for orders to be given. They had done this kind of thing before and knew the procedure.

‘No noise,’ Gage said. ‘Do anything stupid and we will kill you. Simple as that. Don’t believe me you’ll find out the hard way. We just want the money. Paper. No coins.’

They gathered at the door. Gage caught Forrester’s eye and he gave a nod of understanding, freeing reins and holding the bunched horses.

They moved along the boardwalk, loose bunched and scanning the street around them. This was not their first robbery. They knew this was the time things could go wrong. The quiet before a possible storm.

They might have made it if Henry Danbridge hadn’t appeared in the bank door, courage returning, and yelling with enough force to reach across the street.

‘They robbed the bank. Stop them somebody ...’
