Chapter 18
Kingman, Arizona
Event + 8 days
After getting Roger back in bed and assisting Rebecca with her other gunshot patient, the sun had set, and night had given way to morning. Beth had sat with the patient while Rebecca got some sleep. Around daylight, Rebecca returned. She didnât look like she'd slept much, but she was clean.
âAngel is going to show you to the womenâs quarters so you can get some real sleep. That is doctorâs orders. You cannot be of use to anyone if you donât take care of yourself.â
This time, Beth didnât protest. Roger was doing better, and the other patient was stable. She could use a few hours of sleep. Beth was shown to the sleeping quarters for the single women. They passed by a building that said, âShowersâ on the door.
âShowers, as in hot showers?â Beth asked.
âYes, but we have a schedule. Iâm sure they will make an exception since your new. But letâs get you settled into a bunk first, then Iâll grab you a towel and some soap,â the petite woman said.
Angel led her to a row of conex shipping containers that had been converted into living quarters. She counted at least six on her way to the end where she was instructed to wait while the woman gathered a bedroll and shower supplies.
Inside were rows of bunk beds, each divided by a small side table. Beth was given a top bunk at the end of a row.
âWhere is everyone?â Beth asked.
âBreakfast. Doc said to bring you a plate.â
Beth wondered if that was so that she could rest or because she wasnât welcome to join the others, but it didnât much matter to her. She wasnât in the mood to socialize, anyway. And after they left the compound, she would never see any of them again.
âAfter you make your bed and get settled in, you can take your shower. I brought extra washcloths in case you need them,â the woman said, staring down at Bethâs bloody clothes.
âThanks. I probably will.â
The shower felt divine. Although they had a five-minute limit, the woman at the door said Beth could take as long as she needed. The woman didnât know that Beth had experience with cleaning blood off her body quickly. Sheâd done it many times. She understood their response to the sight of her blood-soaked clothes, though, and she was happy to take advantage of the extra time in the shower.
As the warm water ran over her body and flushed away the sand and blood, Beth imagined life after she got home. She could picture her homecoming and embracing her children for the first time since the EMP. Beth tried to remember how long it had been. Sheâd said goodbye to Maddie on the day of the event.
How long ago was that?
It had been at least a week or more. It had been even longer since Beth had seen Jason and Zach. She hadnât been home when Zach left for his field trip to Washington D.C.
Beth ran her hands down the length of her hair and squeezed the shampoo out.
