BODILY CHANGES AND BURPS

“Get on with it, Elson, boy, we don’t have all day!” Crotchety Mrs. Grams pounded her staff on the shop floor, scowling.

Elson rolled his eyes. “Yeah, sure. Pretend you’re mad I’m back, why don’t you?”

She cracked a smile with missing teeth. “You young’uns need to remember not to slack off. Every last one of you, mumbling about breaks every hour like I’m paying you to look at your phones.”

“I’m not!” Elson dragged over a new sack of electronics to his workbench, slicing open the plastic with a brush of his fingers.

Grams’ Used Goods dealt in a few things: selling pure elements and compounds, and extracting the valuables from trash. The storefront was that of a regular pawn shop, but in the shadowy backrooms, there were a few alchemists hard at work.

Elson pulled out a handful of circuit boards, setting them into a plastic tub. Mrs. Grams bought these scraps for a pittance, put it through her alchemists, and sold the pure metals at a far higher markup—more so because they were much purer than most non-magic places could manufacture with nearly no labor involved.

The drawback was that Elson could only deal with small batches at a time, but Mrs. Grams didn’t mind.

He filled the tub with circuit boards and flattened his hands against them, feeling the hum of several different materials: fiberglass, copper, silver, gold, and yet more materials a cacophony in his head. He sent a surge of energy through his hands to break the bonds between the atoms. The circuit boards turned into a fine powder beneath his fingers, one after another. Soon, he was left with a mound of disintegrated trash.

From there, Elson began seeking out the metals. He sifted his fingers through the powder to find the copper first, beads of them gathering on his skin. When the droplets became too large to cling on, they fell back into the powder, to be sieved out later.

When all the copper had beaded up, Elson did the same for iron, then nickel, tin, and zinc. The pile of powder was smaller now, condensed in the form of several metal beads at the bottom of the tub. He began sifting through it for the precious metals: silver first, then gold, and a tiny droplet of palladium.

Those tiny beads gave him the most satisfaction to gather, because he knew how much Mrs. Grams sold them for. They were worth a lot. He set aside the precious metals in a tray, before taking the tub to the large sieve in an airtight chamber.

Halfway there, Elson burped.

Smoke wafted out of his mouth, a thin mist like he’d breathed into some very cold air.

He almost tripped, staring at the dissipating cloud. What was that?

Maybe I’m imagining things because I’m tired. Yaeger had woken him up last night at 2 AM with two fingers up his ass, and he’d given Elson so many orgasms that Elson had been hazy and drifting by the end of it. Then he’d kissed Elson’s ear and whispered, You’re perfect, and rolled over to sleep without asking for anything in return.
