Encourage your child to allow their feelings of anger, sadness and other emotions that may have been labelled as ‘bad’ or ‘unhelpful’ to come out.

Normalize all feelings, and help your child work on ways to express that emotion. For example, jumping on the trampoline when feeling angry and then being able to talk about why they are feeling angry.

Remind your child that trying to feel ‘good’ emotions all of the time is exhausting, unsustainable and unrealistic. Normalize all emotions, even the unpleasant ones, and teach that they will pass.
