Bottles or cans vs. tap

So many factors can influence whether a beer will taste better on tap or in bottles – including its age, its style, and how scrupulous the bar is about cleaning its keg lines – that there’s no right or wrong way to go. That said, most beer tastes better the fresher it is (strong rich styles like imperial stouts and barley wines are exceptions) and, unless they’re imported, beers in kegs are usually the freshest.

Check the ABV

We don’t often check the alcohol percentage in wine before we order it, but with beer – which can be anything from two to fourteen percent or higher – it’s definitely a good idea. As well as indicating whether you should drive afterwards or not, the ABV provides some clues about how a beer will taste. Generally speaking, higher alcohol beers contain more malt, which means a fuller mouthfeel and stronger flavour. Low alcohol beers are much lighter in malt and therefore in body and flavour.
