Chapter Fifteen

NICKI WAS ONLY AWAY from the laundromat for two days, but she thought of this as a gift from God. She now truly understood the feeling of a weekend that was too short. It was eight o’clock, and all the lights were on inside. She pulled around back, but remembered to walk around to the front. She wanted Ashley to feel she had her own space. Nicki wanted to be a guest, but a guest who had desk privileges. She smiled to herself.

As she walked in the front door, Ashley put a trash can, newly bagged, down on the floor, and just smiled.

“I’m so glad you’re here! I had the best weekend,” Ashley reported. “We took in three hundred dollars. Some campers from Hamburg came in with a whole passel of laundry in garbage bags. The place was hopping all weekend.”

“How are you doing?” Nicki suspected Ashley didn’t feel any morning sickness today. “Not queasy?”

“Oh, I’ve already hurled twice, but I’ve finally gotten used to the feeling. My midwife recommended an antacid she said would be safe. I can’t take it with my vitamins, but she said it was okay to take my vitamins at lunch if that helped.”

“Good idea,” Nicki agreed. “I have to fess up—”

“I know, Nicki. I saw your truck come by here. JH’s, too! I swear.” She laughed loudly.

“No. Ashley. I was just going to the store. I had to drive by. Even when the laundromat is closed up, if I drive by, I look. It’s a habit. I promise. But I did call JH to see if you had called him.” Nicki smiled as she lowered her head, feigning shame.

“Y’all are something else. I think I did okay.” Ashley was still chuckling. “But Nicki, can I show you something in the office? I have an idea…a question, really.”

“Of course.” Nicki followed Ashley into the office. Ashley pushed the top door closed partially, with just enough of a crack to be able to see the floor. She reached behind the desk and brought out a half piece of poster board.

“Now, please. Before I show this to you, I’m asking you to keep an open mind.” Nicki nodded. Ashley turned the sign around:
