It was barely eight oâclock in the evening, and Iris was ready to sink into bed and call it a day. She was physically exhausted and mentally drained. Everything was finally catching up to her, and she decided that a hot bath accompanied by a glass of wine and good book would help to soothe the stress and worry.
Iris loved her job. She did, but it was tough to do every day. Kids like Derek were the hardest to deal withâbecause they were inherently good kids in unfortunate situations. He only wanted normalcy and a safe, comfortable, loving home. Derek was the reason Iris had chosen her field of work, and he was the reason she pushed on when she wondered if she could.
She realized that taking off stretches of time from her cases, in order to help Sandra through her treatment, provided her a break from the stress of trying to help these kids. But while she got a break from work, she had swapped out one stressor for another: Sandraâs illness. There was no respite. What she wouldnât give for a vacation from it all.
As the tub filled with water and bubbles, Iris poured herself a glass of Pinot noir and turned on her favorite Pandora radio station. Her hair wasnât long enough to tie back anymore, but she pinned the sides back so it wouldnât fall in her face as she soaked. She stepped into the tub and eased her body into the heat, feeling her muscles tense and then relax in response to the temperature.
Iris rarely let herself sit back and unwind. She was the type of person who always wanted to be doing something and to keep her mind busy. At that moment, while reclining amongst the foam and steam, her mind had nothing to focus on: no reports to fill out, no files to close, no kids to comfort or talk to, and no Sandra to dote or worry over. For the first time in a long time, Irisâs brain didnât have to think about a thing.
For a few moments, she relished in having a blank mind. But within several minutes, her eyes began to well with tears. Iris didnât cry often, and she liked it that way; weeping was useless, and it usually made her feel worse afterward rather than being cathartic. Once she started, though, she couldnât stop.
She wasnât even fully sure why she was crying. Was it because of poor Derek? Or was it because of Sandra and her cancer? Was it seeing Mark and actually hanging out with him on a one-on-one basis for the first time in five yearsâcompounded by how nice he had been by asking about her after her rough day? Maybe it was all three, piling up and overwhelming her.
Iris slid her body into the tub so she could submerge her head under the water. When she resurfaced, her hair and face were soaked, and her tears were indistinguishable from the soapy water.
