CHAPTER THIRTEEN
He shouldn't have been disappointed. He knew what kind of person the Ghost was. He'd looked into the man's mind and seen that fear and greed were in constant conflict within. But there had been a small chance that he would choose to move on with his life. He had enough to allow him to live comfortably if he chose to retire, and he could live luxury-adjacent if he consulted in the future.
Kris couldnât see the future, although he could predict it with some accuracy. He made very good guesses since he had more information to work with. Didn't mean that he couldnât be wrong. Kris thought he was right between thirty and forty percent of the time. With his abilities, he would have been a fantastic stock broker.
Not that he'd ever been interested in the financial world. What he'd been doing over the past two weeks was as close to manipulating the stock market as he'd ever gotten. Directly, anyway, and that was because he was countering someone else's manipulations.
The Workshop did most of the work. Harris' automated systems were still pushing through the trades that would eventually crash the market, but the Workshop was slowing it down. He doubted the Collective knew that there was a very powerful entity opposing them.
And that entity had him to remove those who didn't get the picture, one way or another. Kris shook his head.
"The drones are still keeping track of him," Grenie announced when three more returned to the Sleigh. "I still don't think it's a good idea for you to zip around the city in it, though. It won't be detected by any tech we know about, but it's only a matter of time until we encounter some that we're not ready for. It's best not to leave ourselves open, you know?"
"I need to stay mobile. If I let them tag me, they'll converge, and I'll be useless while I'm fighting for my life. Or, you know, dead. Always a possibility. I need them on their back foot playing defense. If they scent blood in the air, I'll lose my momentum, and I'll have to retreat and regroup. By the time I can hit them again, it might be too late."
Grenie paused like he was trying to figure out what Kris was talking about. They'd been working together since the op started, and the elf was his connection to the Workshop. The Workshop was capable of just about anything, but for some reason, it refused to communicate directly with Kris. He wondered what that would be like. Something that powerful and that omnipotent would be interesting to talk to.
"All right, I have him leaving the financial district," Grenie announced when more of the drones were deployed. "When do you want to make contact with the fucker? Remind him that he agreed not to work for the Collective again?"
"I don't think it was an agreement." Kris shrugged. "I told him I would kill him if I saw him again, and I see him again.
