1 The text of this and another letter by father Verbiest, describing his two journeys in the suite of the Emperor into Tartary, is considerably modified by the Père d’ Orleans from the Dutch, as we find it given by Witzen in his “Noord en Oost Tartarien,” tom. i, p. 185. For this reason a translation from the Dutch is inserted at the end of this volume, in the form of an appendix.

1 The fish here called plaice, is described in the Dutch as “ steur,” a sturgeon. See the translation from the Dutch in the Appendix.

1 The expression thus rendered, is “ l’orient d’été,” the point where the sun rises at the beginning of summer, when the days are longest.

1 This is misspelt in the French for Nanhauaij : but the proper form of the Chinese name given to Yerbiest is Nan-hwae-jin, as is shown in his Chinese map of the world in the British Museum, where the name is given in the Chinese character.

1 The celebrated traveller François Bernier, who resided twelve years in India, during eight years of which he was physician to Aureng Zeyb.

1 A translation of Father Pereira’s letter, describing his journey, which is inserted by Witzen in his “ Noord en Oost Tartarien,” is given at the end of this volume as an Appendix.
