LYRIC THEATRE, SHAFTESBURY AVENUE

This theatre, established by Henry Leslie in 1888 and designed by Charles Phipps, is still extant today and is the oldest theatre building among the many in this famous street. It has many original features including, to its rear in Great Windmill Street, the frontage of a 1767 house. The opening production, Dorothy by Alfred Cellier and Benjamin Stephenson, was the play that enabled the construction of the theatre, since its success at the Prince of Wales’s Theatre from where it was transferred had earned Leslie the requisite funds. The theatre specialized in comic opera during the Victorian part of its history, including the premières of two with librettos by William Schwenck Gilbert, The Mountebanks in 1892 and His Excellency in 1894. It continues as a successful theatre today.
