Chapter 8
Seke
My fucking phone rings. I ignore it, but it keeps ringing. I roll off Rose, rise to my feet in one motion, and grab it from the kitchen worktop. I flick my eyes over the screen and answer the call. Itâs Tara.
âWhat the fuck are you doing?â my sister hisses like a cobra. âI come back from my date and have to tear drunken Lucas off some even more drunken blonde trash, then I learn youâre having a honeymoon with my Rose. Iâll fucking kill you, Seke, I swear.â
âTara, calm down.â I walk out of the house and then carry on along the path descending to the lake. Coldness pricks my skin like icy needles. The air has a harsh, primeval quality, and every inhalation is like touching the soul of the mountains. âRose and I are having a lot of fun. Sheâs happy.â
âI bet youâre having fun. Sheâs only eighteen. Iâll fucking⦠I have no words, Ezra. How dare you?â
âCalm down. Howâs Lucas?â
âSafe from that skunk. I told her she was never to cross my path again.â She draws in a dangerously sharp breath. âBut Rose? How dare you? Seke, for suckâs sake. I never said a word, but this⦠this is justâ¦â
âWhy are you so fucking mad at me? Always so mad. I didnât do anything wrong.â
âYouâre fucking my Rose. I hugged her and wiped her tears and helped her study, and you⦠youâre fucking her.â
âItâs none of your business, Tara.â
âYou are.â She sucks in a breath. âSheâs not some fucking replacement, Seke. Sheâs not Martha.â
My sister has never said so many swear words in such a short time. I guess, itâs stabbing her so much she wants to claw my eyes out.
âI donât want her to be Martha.â My boots touch the shore and the pebbles scrunch under my feet.
âLike hell.â
I growl as rage rises to my throat. âItâs never been about Martha. I fucking know that now. Itâs always been about Rose. Only Rose. Sheâs mine. Has always been mine. Mine. My nicte, my iara.â My flower. My lady.
Thereâs crispy silence until Taraâs sharp breath breaks it. âYou⦠like love her or something?â
âI love Rose more than anything.â
Tara stops breathing as the silence rings between us, and then she squeals, but it sounds like a squeal of joy. âYou never loved any woman, Seke. Not even Martha. I knew she wasnât for you, but I said nothing. Fuck. You never loved and nowâ¦â
âWhat about you and mom, huh?â
âItâs different.â She chuckles and squeals again. âIâve been watching you. Youâre mad about her from the moment she became a young woman.â
âI am.â
âAnd very possessive.â She sounds amused.
âNothing wrong with that.â
âYou want to brand her?â
âAs soon as possible.â
âFuck me.â
âYouâd better tell me something about your date.â
âIt was very uneventful. I mean heâs very respectful, tactful, and sweet. Very sweet. We talked and talked and talked. Then we walked and walked and walked along the beach until the sunrise.â
âI like the guy.â
âHeâs a cop, Seke.â
A cold silence hangs between us.
