It was quiet in the aisles, as it usually was this early in the morning. He thought he might meet Sally on the way around, but he bought his few things without seeing her. Finally, he made his way to the café and sat staring out through the window.
âMick? That is you, isnât it, under the beard?â
He turned to see a shortish, blonde, heavily pregnant woman staring at him.
âSally?â he questioned. âMy goodness. You look so different.â He stood, and she pulled him into a hug.
âSorry Iâm late. This little one was bouncing on my bladder again and I had to divert to the toilet before I even left the house. Then I got caught behind a tractor on a country roadâ¦â
He stared at her. âI canât believe itâs you. Can I get you something? Sit down and take the weight off your feet.â
âTea would be good, and an egg and bacon sandwich. This little one gets so hungry.â
He got them both tea and made the order, then sat back down.
She stared at him. âWow, itâs been so long since Iâve seen you. Last I knew, youâd moved in with Alfie. I went to London not long after, and ended up working in an estate agency, got married and now this one is due in less than a month. Phil, heâs my husband, is on an early shift. He used to be in the Met police, heâs a sergeant, but finally, after Iâd badgered him so much, he got a transfer back here. I wanted to bring this little one up nearer home and out of the big city. Sorry, Iâm talking too much as ever.â
A waiter brought their rolls. Mick watched as Sally took a big bite.
âGod, Iâve missed such salty goodness,â she said, groaning.
Mick took a bite out of his bacon roll. âDo you know what youâre having?â he asked between mouthfuls.
âNo, we wanted it to be a surprise. I donât mind either way, and weâve painted the nursery all colors of the rainbow, much to my motherâs annoyance. Weâve got a house a little outside town. The garden is huge, which will give this one somewhere to play. But, enough of meâhow are you? And howâs Alfie?â
âHe died, suddenly, three years ago.â
She stopped chewing and swallowed, taking in his words. âOh my God, Iâm so sorry. Was it an accident?â
âNo, meningitis. It only took a few hours.â
âOh my. I donât know what to say.â She reached over and put her hand on his. He didnât pull away. At school, sheâd been his protector and only friend.
âIs there anyone else now?â
He frowned.
She blushed. âSorry, that was insensitive and crass. I still donât always think before I open my mouth.â
âNo, itâs fine,â he muttered. âThere is someone, butâ¦itâs complicated.â He wiped his eyes, then finished drinking his tea, not sure what to say.
Sally ate the last of her roll. âComplicated, eh? Sounds intriguing. Look, why donât you come to my house now? We can talk better there.
