Grace lived up to her name. Her movements were graceful and everything she did was gracefully executed. Report cards came home with glowing remarks from teachers: âShe is a joy to have in class and the students look to her for guidance and advice. She is a natural born leader.â
âStraight A's again. Good job Grace! I think we should go out and celebrate.â Jack exclaimed when he saw the glowing report card. âAlice, go get yourself ready, we are hitting the town tonight, and taking our two best girls with us!â
âJack I don't feel like going out, and Gwen's been crabby all day,â she answered from the couch.
Alice rarely got off the couch anymore. Jack left in the morning, taking Grace to school after making sure that Gwen had been given breakfast. Alice was on the couch when he got home after work.
Most of the time, Alice remembered to pick Grace up from school; every once in a while, she'd forget and Jack would find her sitting on the library steps waiting for him to walk by. âHi Daddy!â he'd hear as he was walking past. Quickly he'd scoop her up as if nothing was wrong and together they'd walk the block to their apartment.
When Gwen started kindergarten, the Nelson's world changed. âMommy, you won't forget to pick Gwen up, will you?â Grace badgered Alice on that very first morning; it had started as soon as the alarm had gone off. It continued through breakfast and when they were leaving.
âNo, Grace, I won't forget to pick Gwen up from school,â Alice repeated every time she was asked. âI will pick Gwen up at 12:30 and then we will come back and pick you up at 3:00. I promise Grace. I won't forget.â
âMommy, are you sure you don't want to take Gwen for her first day of school?â Gracesâ green eyes danced with excitement for her little sister. Gwen on the other hand looked absolutely terrified over the whole ordeal. She'd never really been around other kids. Her entire world consisted of her mother, her sister and her father and the occasional trip to the park. Even though she was going to the same school as her sister, they were going to be on different ends of the campus and she was scared.
âGrace, your sister will be just fine. If she wanted me to drop her off, she would have asked me to drop her off. Now go on, you're both going to be late. I'll see you after school.â
Grace and Gwen left the apartment with their father, and that became the daily routine. Jack dropped them off, Alice picked them up: Gwen at 12:30, Grace at 3:00. Alice found that with nothing but time on her hands, a two bedroom apartment becomes more of a prison, and less of a home. She had lost touch with all of her friends from college and knew no one outside of her world with Jack. The days became endless. She began to drink more during the day to make the time go by.
