Robert had trouble following Lord Fitzroy’s topics of discussion. The man was on his third brandy - he had consumed two glasses of wine at dinner to every one Robert drank, which was two - and his words were slurred. Robert had tried numerous times to steer the conversation to the man’s involvement in selling women, but it was not an easy task. Lord Fitzroy preferred to discuss his conquests rather than business. He seemed proud of the number of women he had bedded.
“I have every right to bed any woman of my choosing,” the man was saying. “Susanna approves, or at least the hefty amount of her allowance keeps her from complaining.” He leaned forward and placed a finger on his lips. “That is the secret, you know. Give them enough money to keep them busy and you can do whatever you wish.”
Though Robert responded with a smile, inside he felt nothing but disgust for this man. He cared for Charlotte and could never imagine even entertaining the notion of another woman.
His heart caught. He and Charlotte were merely playing a role. There was no other woman, for she was not his wife. What right did he have to think beyond their playacting?
“And forget servant wenches,” Lord Fitzroy continued. “I learned my lesson with that lot.”
Robert correct his posture. Finally, something he could use. “What do you mean?”
“We dismissed a maid last year after we caught her stealing. The woman had the audacity to accuse me of selling her!” He pointed a finger at Robert. “Be careful who you employ, for they are never thankful for what you give them, and they will tell all sorts of lies if you do anything to upset them, the ungrateful leeches. Come into my home, eat my food, burn my fuel, and take my money. And what do I get in return? Unfounded accusations, that’s what!”
Robert wondered how much truth the man spoke. “Perhaps if I find one stealing from me I will simply sell her to save the hassle of the rumor.”
Lord Fitzroy frowned. “I do hope you are not caught up in that nonsense,” he said. “Such things are terrible no matter how hopeless the servants may be.”
For more than a dozen years Robert had met many men who were engaged in nefarious acts. All of them he could read like an open book. What he saw before him confirmed that the man was telling the truth. He was not involved in the sale of women into prostitution.
The door opened and Lady Fitzroy and Charlotte entered the room. Though the redheaded woman was pretty, she paled in comparison beside Charlotte. Robert’s heart raced as he stood, his eyes tracing over the woman who played his wife. For a moment, he imagined them working together as he and Sally once had, but this time, Charlotte would be his lover in truth.
Then he shook his head. What was he thinking? Charlotte was an heiress and deserved a far better life than what he could offer her.
