The dragon hadnât given them a timeframe for his arrival. That fact set Garyâs teeth on edge. Even a brief, private getaway with Braeleigh whoâd sorely missed his company couldnât drive the worry from his mind for long.
âYou seem distracted,â Braeleigh observed as she reassembled her armor.
âDistracted?â Gary echoed incredulously. âI just invited a dragon here. Yeah. Iâm a little distracted.â
Braeleigh huffed. âSo, what? Weâre adventurers. Dealing with dragons and orcs and misguided royals is what our job is all about. Still not sure what we get out of Kurgath being frozen in our basement. I mean, aside from not having to worry about him showing up in the middle of one of our other battles.â
âThereâs only going to be one battle,â Gary promised absently. âAnd as for the dragon, whatâs more intimidating to an army outside our walls watching a dragon enter the palace and never come out?â
Dawn light filtered through the curtains as Braeleigh put a finger to her lips. âI suppose Iâd have to wonder whether they had a dragon in their back pocket to spring on me.â
âExactly,â Gary replied. âIt buys us time. Iâm not sure what weâll do with the time yet. But this is a siege. The longer we can drag it out, the harder it is on the camping armies.â
He walked over and threw back the curtains.
Durrotek spread before him, drenched in brilliant sunlight. It looked so full of hope, of promise, of potential. But that illusion was spoiled when Braeleigh came up by his side. âSee that?â
Following the line of her arm and finger, Gary squinted into the glare.
âShit,â he muttered. âNo rest for the wicked.â
There, a mere speck in the distance, an awkward bird flapped ungainly wings. But the flick of a dangling tail revealed the identity of the flying shape on a heading straight for Durrotek.
Dragon.
âWant to pop down to the dungeons and level up quick?â Braeleigh asked with a peck on Garyâs cheek. Her lips were soft and warm.
He wouldnât let that distract him. âYouâre on board with Zeetoâs mass murder plan all of a sudden?â
âYou havenât asked where Caspian is,â she replied coldly.
Suddenly, Gary felt sick. âWhereâs Caspian?â
âIt was one of the prisoners. We donât know which one. They donât talk to usâjust insults. Itâs all the human they speak. Zeeto wonât let me down there. He said you need the XP. He said itâs key to our victory. I canât avenge him myself. Will you do this for me?â
Swallowing past a lump in his throat, Gary couldnât even look her in the eye. âYeah. Iâll do it. Lemme get my guitar. How⦠how long you think before the dragon gets here?â
âDo it quick. Forget Zeeto. Use fire. That lightning spell wonât cook them fast enough.â
Gary made his way down to the dungeons, grabbing the Axe of Shredding on the way.
What am I doing? he asked himself as he made his way through the palace. Killing prisoners?
Another side of him wondered: Why was this so much worse than
