“Mr. Maunder!” Darcy roared out of the door and his valet scuttled in with the freshly pressed clothes over his arm.

Hurriedly Darcy dressed while reading the rest of the note.

Please do not follow me, dear brother. I will not see you. Mr. Wickham says that the other officers’ wives will take me in until we can be married. And I will keep Mrs. Annesley with me too, as my companion. At least she seems to care about whether I am happy.

Darcy scowled furiously. Another companion who had let his sister down.

She obviously had no idea as to the reality of what she was doing. The militia were not the regular army, and the pay was commensurately lower. Wickham was most certainly after Georgiana’s dowry, and he would be hurrying to get her to Scotland as soon as possible.

The butler came back into the room.

“What have you found out? When did she leave?”

The man looked as desperate as Darcy felt. “We are fortunate that it was only an hour or so ago, sir. Miss Darcy intended to leave at midnight, but the coachman persuaded her that, with no moonlight, it would be dangerous to leave any earlier.”

He finished what he was saying as he hurried down the stairs after Darcy.

“Why the devil didn’t the coachman report it at midnight then?” Darcy pushed the rage down. He must recover Georgiana first.

Later he could find out who had erred. “Is my horse ready?” As he reached the hall, Darcy saw his steward with relief. “Come with me.”

He turned into the library and resealed Georgiana’s letter. “Take this to Mr. Richard Fitzwilliam. Take it yourself, and it is to go into no one else’s hand.”

“Yes, sir. Your horse is ready.”

“Good man. You are to tell Mr. Fitzwilliam that I am going to Meryton, where the militia is quartered at present. Mr. Fitzwilliam is to arrange the couple be stopped if they are making their way to Scotland.”

Please don’t let me be too late. He could not bear it if they were too late.
