LUCKY RODE MARGARITA over to the section where Elizabeth was fixing the fence. He unloaded the new wire and brought it over to her, along with some water.

“Thought you might need this.” He handed her the drink, and she removed her cream-colored leather-and-canvas work gloves before accepting the reusable bottle.

“Thanks.” She stood and swigged a big sip, the sunlight reflecting off the diamonds in the engagement ring, and then wiped her mouth with the back of her arm. “You didn’t have to do this.”

“Maybe I wanted to.” He was getting the feeling he’d like to do more for her with each passing day. “Teamwork, remember?”

Her smile brightened his day, already memorable from the moment Audrey had awakened the entire camp with the news the tooth fairy had come, then waved the dollar bill around as if it was a golden belt buckle.

“As if I could forget.” She set the bottle on the ground next to the post.

“How can I help?”

“You brought the supplies I need. That’s more than plenty for now.” She kneeled and donned her gloves before picking up the electric fencing pliers.

He tapped her on her shoulder. “I’m more than a pretty face.”

He scrunched up his nose and crossed his eyes, bringing forth a laugh, the prettiest sound in Colorado as far as he was concerned.

“Have a pair of work gloves?” she asked.

“Sure do.” He extracted them from the back pocket of his jeans.

“Good. Can you use the fence stretcher to pull the broken sides back together?”

In his sleep, but he merely nodded. Over the next few hours, they worked together, laughing at times, a pleasant silence at others. Then she slid the pieces of wire together through a crimping sleeve while he bound the sleeve in place. They stood and checked out their handiwork. “Clear of debris and safe for the cattle. Good work, partner,” he said.

He extended his hand until they shook in a firm handshake, shivers running through him at the contact. He kept that to himself.

“Thanks, Lucky.” It was her turn to scrunch up her nose. “Some fiancée I am. I don’t even know your real name.”

He removed his cowboy hat and dipped his head. “Lucas Harper at your disposal.”

She laughed. “Nice to meet you, Lucas Harper.”

He joined in the laughter. There was something about Elizabeth that put him at ease. While she had a slightly formal manner about her, fitting for the future owner of the Double I, she wasn’t pretentious or fussy. He’d never felt this comfortable around anyone, not even Cale, Will or Sabrina. “And I’d say Audrey’s on to something. You seem more like a Lizzie than an Elizabeth to me.”

Her slight sigh was almost lost in the breeze, but he noticed everything about her. “I have a feeling my nickname might be one thing that endures after this trip.”

Too bad their relationship couldn’t have had that same lasting power. He’d like it if her last name was Harper someday, but he roped calves and she owned them. “Would that be a bad thing?”

She shrugged.
