Chapter 13
Haley
âThatâs not anything I recognize.â
Her hands stilled on the keys. The room went silent except for the cadence of her harsh breathing. Claireâs hand slipped from her shoulder and tiptoed to her neck. She pinned Haley to the bench, her fingers wrapped around her throat lightly.
âIâm sorry if I kept you awake. I know itâs late,â Haley whispered. Her throat bobbed against Claireâs hand. She turned her face as Claire stepped out from behind her, walking to the side of the bench. She adjusted her hand on Haleyâs throat, releasing her, but tipping her chin up further. Haley stared at the gorgeous goddess in black, utterly hypnotized by her regal bearing. âSomeone will see us,â she said, a defense she didnât want against a woman that she so desperately did.
âWhat does it matter? This is my house. I have many secrets, but you arenât one of them.â
Haleyâs heart sank. Iâll never be one of them. I want to be one of them.
âI allowed you to scream last time. To make as much noise as you want. I didnât command you to be silent.â Claire leaned against the pianoâs keys without actually sitting on them, so that they didnât make a sound. Her finger smoothed over Haleyâs bottom lip. She didnât realize it was wobbling until Claireâs touch steadied her. âNo one in this house will judge us or tattle on us. Youâre not my secret while youâre here, but you know that there isnât an us out there.â
Haley let her guard down. She knew better than to trust Claire, but she wanted to. When they were together, she forgot about everything else. That was a problem, but with her so close, it was a struggle to remember why. Her body relaxed, melting back into the bench, lulled by the expression on Claireâs face, which was far from open, but not closed off like she usually was either.
As if she was pleased, Claire stroked Haleyâs hair. She finally took a strand between her fingers and caressed it all the way to the end before she let it fall back. Haley found herself leaning closer, every passing second making her breathing more ragged. She leaned into Claireâs aura, inhaling the clear, clean scent of her. She wanted to stand, to wrap her arms around Claire and pull her close. To touch her, finally, at last. To prop her up on the piano and do as many wickedly wonderful things to her as sheâd done.
Claire was too fast. She shoved away from the keys and walked around the bench, behind Haley again, where she couldnât see her. She deprived her of her beauty, but not of her scent. She leaned in, all heat and sweet perfume, and whispered in Haleyâs ear.
âPlay for me, darling. Play what you were playing. Was that your own?â
âY-yes,â Haley admitted. She hadnât played it for anyone before. She hadnât thought Claire would be listening, and that if she was, sheâd realize it was something sheâd never heard before.
