Chapter Six
Billyâs heart jumped with excitement when he saw Henry and Damon take each otherâs hand after they exited Damonâs new truck. It was a good sign for the new life Billy wanted to explore with the two men. Heâd been battling with his bear for control for what seemed like an eternity. Billy had finally won. Hopefully, he wouldnât have to wage that war again. Living in harmony with the beast within was always the best.
The reason why Billy had gone feral was something he wished he could forget, but he couldnât. Darnel, a vampire shifter, someone Billy had been dating for a while, had begun to beat Billy. It had been so severe that heâd felt his life slipping away from him. That was when his bear had taken over. Billy had shifted and killed his abuser. Much of his life was blank after that. He couldnât remember anything between when heâd defended himself against Darnel and being locked in a chain link pen.
Some memories were clearer than others. The attack on the foundationâs building was one that was quite vivid. The ceiling and walls had exploded. Brick, metal, wiring, and pipes had turned into a confusing mess, made worse by clouds of dust. The air had been filled with other things, such as smoke and the coppery scent of blood. Shifters had died. Billyâs bear had taken the opportunity to squeeze through the twisted debris and crawl over and around the rubble until it was outside and running as fast as it could away from the chaos.
Other memories werenât quite as intense. Some were of his bear moving around the valley, searching for a safe place. Heâd hunted for any kind of food he could find, from seed in bird feeders to insects under logs. All the while heâd moved away from the most populated areas to a forest, which had eventually led him to Henryâs ranch, bordering the forest. Although he had seen Henry numerous times, he had never considered the human a threat. Henry seemed to have a live-and-let-live attitude, which was great for Billy and his bear. Theyâd enjoyed grazing in the pasture along the bank of the stream, fishing occasionally, and just cooling off on hot days.
Billyâs bear had been successful in hibernating. The wolf shifter had come into the den one day. and theyâd shared the space, Billy vaguely aware of the wolf coming and going as he needed to hunt in order to survive, while Billy survived on his bodyâs fat store.
Damonâs voice brought Billy out of his memories. âHey, Billy, weâre discussing what we want for supper. Any input?â
When it came to food, Billy wasnât picky. âWe have a grill, charcoal, and hot dogs. Cooking out will be fun. You guys can relax while I cook.â
The simple meal turned out to be a lot of fun. They sat in the yard on rickety old aluminum folding chairs Henry had brought out of the shed beside the small barn where Henry stored his grandfatherâs truck.
