building has entirely disappeared, having been replaced by the new church from the designs of the late Mr. Carpenter. The west wall is pierced by a large rose window, in the tracery of which the Greek Cross, commemorative of the earlier church, is prominent. (See Appendix B.)

A Greek inscription remained on the exterior of the church until taken down about 1827, when the new chancel was begun (Canon Liddon having laid the foundation-stone), which was completed and consecrated on Tuesday, 27th May, 1873, by the Bishop of London, Dr. Jackson.

This Greek inscription, engraved on a stone slab in five lines of modern Greek characters, was placed over the outside of the west door of the church to commemorate the older church erected some two hundred years previously. This stone slab has since been removed from its original position, and is now inserted in the inside of the south-west wall of the present church.1
