We settled into an enjoyable little routine for the short time the four of us stayed at Averyâs place.
Avery let me shuttle him around town in the Hummer, showing me where his parents and sister worked and a few other points of interest. âYou know, if you think you might stay, you may be money-ahead to return the Hummer and either do ride shares or find something reliable for having here in Bexley,â Avery had mused on our way back to his place.
He was right. Money wasnât an issue, but the Hummerâs daily rental fee wasnât cheap and I didnât need the monstrosity in Bexley.
The day Avery went back to work, I cleaned up the breakfast dishes while visiting with Johnny and Sylvie, and told my grandfather my plans to return the Hummer and look for something a bit more practical.
Sylvieâs eyes sparkled. âI think itâs a great idea. That beast is really nice, but something else might serve you better. During your time here,â she added. âYou can always sell it before you go back to California.â
Both Johnny and Sylvie knew about my hands and the needed surgery, and they both were definitely on Team Stay in Bexley Indefinitely, even though they thought they were being neutral.
By the time Avery got home from work that evening, Iâd been to a reputable car lot, bought a truck, and talked the salesperson into having someone drive my new truck to the rental place so I could drop off the Hummer.
âDamn, when someone gives you an idea, you go with it, huh?â Avery asked, admiring the truck from the window. Heâd showered and now stood in a t-shirt, basketball shorts, and bare feet.
Fuckinâ sexy bare feet.
I had no doubt heâd started going barefoot more since Iâd made it known how sexy I thought his feet were. Had nothing to do with it being hot and him wanting to be comfortable. No, he was just teasing me.
âThe Hummer was a rash decision and not practical. The truck is a better vehicle and Iâll be able to sell easily once I decide to leave.â
Avery gave a brief nod. âSounds like a plan.â
âCome on,â Sylvie announced as she made her way to the dining room table. âItâs game night.â
âI donâtââ
Avery slapped a hand over my mouth, his body pressing just enough against me to have me wanting more.
A lot more.
âDonât say it,â he whispered in my ear.
âSay what?â I mumbled behind his hand.
âDonât say you donât play games,â he hissed. âShe will make it her personal mission to teach you at least twenty gamesâcard games, board games, role playing gamesâ¦she has at least fifty and she knows how to use them.â Avery was playing it up now, his lips feathering lightly over my ear, but I wasnât complaining. Not in the least. âJust sit down at the table. Weâll play the game. Sheâll be happy. Sheâs old, she probably doesnât have many game nights left.â
Sylvie chucked a napkin ring at his head and Avery yelped.
âJust
